How AI Shopping Assistants Actually Read Your Product Pages

An AI assistant doesn't read your product page the way a shopper does. It doesn't see your hero image or your brand fonts. What it can act on with any confidence is structured data — a machine-readable copy of the page, in a format it parses directly instead of inferring from prose. Without it, an assistant has to guess your catalog from paragraphs of marketing copy, and it usually just declines to recommend anything it can't verify.

Why it's the single heaviest category in the rubric

In our own scoring rubric, structured data is worth 30 of the 100 points — more than any other single category: crawler access and titles & meta are 20 each, canonicals & OG tags, alt text, and content depth are 10 each. That weighting isn't arbitrary: it's the difference between an assistant that can state your price and availability with confidence, and one that hedges or skips your store entirely.

Concretely, that means Product JSON-LD (name, price, availability, brand), Offer and Breadcrumb markup, a canonical URL so an assistant knows which version of a page is the real one when several resolve to the same product, and Open Graph and Twitter card tags that decide how a link renders when it's shared.
